FoF's Top 5 Conventions of 2012

One of the things we love to do at the FoF is cover conventions.  We love seeing new and old friends and catching up, interviewing and seeing new places.  We have been fortunate to have attended/covered conventions and events in and outside of the US. Now that 2013 is here, we would share our Top 5 from 2012.  These are our recommendations for the con goer.  If you see a convention listed below that you haven’t been too, then we recommend checking out their site for more information.

As most of our followers know, I’m no stranger to conventions.  We are fortunate enough to go to our favorites and the Fan Days (Dallas Comic Con) is one of them.  Below is our brief time at one of the most respected and well-run conventions in the US.

To be honest DCC is in our top 3. DCC can be broken up into three categories: Fans, Guests, Staff.

A Frightmare to Remember

If you like all things horror (psychos, zombies & chainsaws oh my!) then Texas Frightmare Weekend (TFW) is the convention you should not miss.  TFW was held May 4-6, at the Hyatt Regency in the DFW Airport and it packed a hell of a punch. While it boasts that it provides 93,000sq ft of space, the venue floor design was so well thought out that it felt much more intimate. The layout of the isles and tables provided for a maximizing of traffic flow that allowed for easy access to the guests as well as the vendors.

Starcon 2011

Every year the FoF has the fun task of picking out our convention schedule for the year.  There are a few that are special to us but we love to find new cons to cover and new friends to make.  Recently, I had the pleasure of chatting with Patricia Stewart Bertrand.  Patricia is the promoter for Starcon.  Starcon is taking place, June 24, 25 and 26 at the Sheraton Airport, Hilton Airport and Marriott Airport in Vancouver, Canada.  Below is what fans can expect if they are traveling up to Starcon this year.

1. Tell us about Starcon and how it came to be?

As a Canadian, I've attended several conventions both in Canada and in the U.S. I've enjoyed meeting the actors and people behind the scenes - the people who create a television show. And, after experiencing large conventions like Comic Con and small conventions such as the Stargate conventions, I realized that it just made sense to have a convention in Vancouver that was a mix of all the best parts of the big and small conventions that are currently available.

With so many sci-fi shows actually filming in Vancouver, having a convention close by also made sense. So, I gathered a group of people together who have helped me with celebrity events in the past to assist with this endeavor. STARCON 2011 is completely fan run and is a charity event. Our charity is Amanda Tapping's Sanctuary for Kids.

The FoF Invades Wizard World Austin

This is our last stop on our convention tour for 2010.  As you know, going into 2011 we will be reducing our convention schedule dramatically from 2010. This is being done to accomodate all our great partners to bring you more exclusive interviews, set visits and much much more.  So out of all the conventions left for 2010, why did we pick Wizard World Austin?

The National Inclusion Project Provides Summer Camp Experience for Children with Disabilities

The National Inclusion Project has been approved as the 2011 Beneficiary of Dragon*Con Charity Events.  Dragon*Con is an annual Labor Day Weekend convention that focuses on films, TV, comics, horror, animation, gaming and much, much more. Jerry Aiken of the National Inclusion Project said that the timing is perfect.  Dragon*Con, the annual popular culture convention held every Labor Day weekend in Atlanta, is known in the convention world for its expansive giving.  Last year, Dragon*Con raised $40,000 for the Georgia Chapter of the The Lupus Foundation of America.

The National Inclusion Project serves to bridge the gap that exists between young people with disabilities and the world around them. They partner with communities and inclusive programs, creating awareness about the possibilities that inclusion can bring for people with disabilities.

This year, Dragon*Con is encouraging our members and fans to get involved early in supporting the National Inclusion Project. As one Dragon*Con member put it, “charity from Dragon*Con doesn't have to be limited to four days in September.”

Jennifer Breland-Dykes, of the Dragon*Con StarGate: Multiverse, praises the charity’s ability to transform lives  with very limited resources, pointing out that, “the National Inclusion Project is not an organization with a huge email distribution, or with a large media campaign budget. “

One way that Dragon*Con is supporting The National Inclusion Project is by encouraging votes for the charity in the "Pepsi Refresh Everything Challenge", in which they are giving away millions of dollars to non-profits each month.  For the month of October, National Inclusion Project is in the running for a $50,000 grant.

“If Dragon*Con’s members vote only once, it would make a difference,” Breland-Dykes pointed out. “If everyone voted daily, we could see NIP at #1 before the month is out.”  Dragon*Con has been sharing this alert with its members through social media including Twitter, Facebook, and its own websites.

In 2011, Dragon*Con will celebrate its 25thAnniversary. The Dragon*Con staff of over 17,000 volunteers is already working to ensure that this is the best and biggest Dragon*Con ever.
