Disney’s TRON
By The Captain

The original TRON was truly ahead of its time.  Sure it had cheesy dialog, a touch of the design was inspired from Star Wars, and the use of the computer (application of and the use of terms) aren’t correct when compared to today’s usage.  But it is great early ‘80s sci-fi!  And let’s not forget, this movie was made before computers were even CLOSE to being main stream.  Things as touch screen keyboards and voice interface, where today are reality, in 1982 WAS something out of science fiction.  When this first came out, I immediately loved it.  As a child of the ‘80s, I ask you, what’s not to love?  This was a time when arcade games were becoming huge….so a movie that had our hero pulled into a computer and having to actually play video games from the inside of the game, was, and, to a geek like me, still is the coolest thing.

Our hero Kevin Flynn has been fired from the large cooperation Encom, to cover up the theft, by his coworker Dillinger, of five video games Flynn created.  Dillinger claimed he wrote the games, and was subsequently promoted and put on the fast track in becoming a senior VP of Encom due to the money it generated the company.  However from Flynn’s loft in the arcade he owned, he has been trying to hack into the main computer (called the Master Control Program, who has a mind of its own) to find the proof that Dillinger is a fraud.  With help from his friends Alan and Lora, Flynn breaks into Encom to have easier access to the MCP.  Via another project being conducted, the MCP sucks him in to the actual computer world to stop him.  Master Control thinks it would be fitting to kill him by way of some of the games Flynn himself created.

Flynn meets up with the program TRON, who was created by Alan (and also looks like him) as a security program to monitor the system and to keep an eye on the ever growing MCP.  The two, along with another program, RAM, escape the game grid in an attempt to get to and ultimately destroy the MCP.

The two disc set is a DVD and blu-ray combo, which in this captain’s humble opinion, is the best way to do movies now days.  I really must say, the blu ray picture and sound are incredible.  I’ve watched some blu-ray converts of older movies that haven’t been worth the money.  However Disney seemed to have taken the time to do it correctly, and it definitely shows.  The bonus features have the same as the 20th Anniversary DVD in case you missed it (the making of, original trailers, photo galleries, deleted scenes, ect), as well as an updated nine minute kind of homage to TRON and what and how it has influenced over the years, and I believe a new audio commentary (I didn’t watch the original commentary from the previous DVD, so I’m not 100% sure).  If you have only watched TRON Legacy or plan to watch it, the original TRON is worth your time…as how it is also an interesting reminder of just how far we’ve come in technology, in the way movies are made, and how we live our lives.  End of line.

and now from Stacy

Tron (The Original Classic) now brought to you on blu-ray.  It's beautiful, it's amazing and I still don't understand it.

Sadly I had to call my husband for help on this plot line, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it.  And this wasn't my first time watching it.  I think it falls to the fact that unlike him, I didn't play video games growing up (and I don't play them now) so some of that interchange between real world and game world was completely lost on me.  The one thing I can tell you - on blu-ray this movie is beautiful.  The colors are vibrant and eye catching and that allows for the action to really pop off the screen at you.  (I noticed I was mesmerized even when I didn't know what the heck was going on.)  You should go out and make sure you own this one on blu-ray.  It's a purchase you won't regret.
